This morning, I was up really, really early. Like 7am.

After going to McDonalds to get my breakfast (a daily trip) and McD did not have any drinks beside Mango; I walked over to Mercury Drugs and bought a Gatorade (orange).

Small problem: my taste buds didn’t want Orange Gatorade at 7am.

Street Kids are like the police. When you dont need them, they are everywhere but when you are looking for them, they are nowhere to be found.

I walk around Puerto Princesa by the old market a little until I found a street Kid and never did. Finally, gave the gatorade to an old man on the street and he told me, “Salamat po.”

I am sure later when I have nothing to give, the street kids will be everywhere.

The other day, someone forwarded me a blogpost on Blogger about how lazy missionaries are. It was written by Jamie Wright. She seems to be a former missionary to Costa Rica that is now in California.

Her blog, Deciphering Missions, starts out about how they did a baptismal and did not have relationship with the people. They think this is somehow wrong. I am not sure but I think, just maybe, John the Baptist didn’t have relationship with everyone he dunked in the Jordan. Possible?

I never know the impact I have on people, especially because I so busy with the various thing I do. I might only have a few minutes on the way to somewhere to impact them. It might be sitting next to them on a Jeepney ride or helping them through the Jungle. I just make the most of every opportunity and hope the “seed is planted.”

Some people come into your life for a season, others a lifetime.

That season could be 5 minutes. Make the most of it.

Jamie goes on to question support and called them investors like mission work has share holders and partners like it Apple or Amazon.

In her blog,

It’s kinda scary when you think about it, but Christian Missions is a billion (that’s BILLION, like, with a B!) dollar industry – with virtually no oversight, no standards of practice, and no hiring requirements. To top it off, it’s shrouded in a cloud of overly spiritualized language, easily manipulated to allow people to believe that more good is coming from their missions dollars than is necessarily true.

I have several problems with this as first a missionary, and secondly a former business consultant. People going to heaven or hell is not business. The Church in North America may be about business and keeping an ongoing cash flow but missions is the frontline. Soulwinning should never be demoted to a board meeting or a prayer service. (though many times, it is)

Most missionaries do have oversight (sometimes too much), they do have standards, they do have requirments for being a missionary. It is called “bible college.”

I agree most missionaries are too freaking spiritual and can’t relate on a personal level but it is not their fault. People back in the States expect missionaries to be part of 12 elders in Revelation! Not good if you ask me.

Then it goes to say,

…You don’t believe there are worthless missionaries out there? I know missionaries working all over the planet and every last one of them can give you an example of someone living in the field, today, who’s not doing jack shit for Jesus. Some could tell you horror stories of how missionaries are mishandling their time…

First of all, the tone of this is someone angry about missions, their failure or something that I just can’t see. I am not sure what “doing jack shit for Jesus” really is? I mean, what it is really?

The real problem with this concept is we have a set guide of what “missionary service” is and isn’t. Sometimes, doing mission work has little to do with Christianity and just practically helping the people. Helping a family build a house is not all that spiritual but it is critical to mission work in the area.

The whole idea of being “apostolic” is being a pioneer in a region. That means you are doing something new that isn’t being done. If you are doing that, you are not “in the grid.” Therefore, it could be a challenge to be understanding to people who just don’t “get it.”

I wish I could take this blog apart line by line for people but it just isn’t worth the time. The points are lost in the tone. Kinda reminds me on Revival or Riots and Ryan Rhoades “ministry.”
